Smögenbryggan is the heart of Smögen and one of the most recognisable places on Sweden’s west coast. The wooden boardwalk follows the harbour past old fishing buildings, colourful boathouses, shops, cafés and restaurants. For many international visitors, this is the image that first made them want to visit Smögen.
A harbour with a long history
Smögen developed as a fishing community, and its sheltered harbour has been used for centuries. Fishing is still visible today, even though tourism has become an important part of life around the harbour.
The traditional boathouses are a particularly famous sight. Once primarily working buildings connected with fishing and boats, many now contain seasonal shops and businesses.
What can you do at Smögenbryggan?
The simplest activity is also one of the best: walk. Follow the waterfront, watch the harbour traffic and stop whenever something catches your attention. In summer you will find plenty of opportunities for shopping, eating, having coffee or simply sitting beside the water.
Several boat excursions also depart from the harbour area. Hållö is a popular destination, and other trips allow visitors to experience more of the Bohuslän archipelago from the sea.
When should you visit?
July brings the biggest crowds and the liveliest atmosphere. If you prefer photography and quieter walks, mornings are ideal. Late spring and early autumn are also attractive, when Smögen is calmer but the coastline is just as impressive.
Allow time to leave the busiest part of the boardwalk too. Smögen’s granite rocks, small streets and sea views are an important part of the experience.
