Smögen may be small, but there is plenty to do – especially if you enjoy the sea, coastal scenery and good food. The village is easy to explore on foot, and many of its best experiences are within walking distance of the harbour.
Walk along Smögenbryggan
Start with Smögen’s famous harbour boardwalk. Walk past colourful boathouses, browse small shops, stop for coffee and watch the boats come and go. The atmosphere is particularly lively during summer.
Photograph the colourful boathouses
The row of brightly painted boathouses is one of Sweden’s most photographed coastal views. Visit early in the morning if you want a quieter experience.
Take a boat to Hållö
Hållö is only a short boat ride away and makes an excellent half-day or full-day excursion. Explore the granite landscape, visit the lighthouse and swim in remarkably clear water.
Eat fresh seafood
Smögen is closely associated with fishing. Try prawns, crab, lobster when in season, or locally landed fish at one of the restaurants and fish shops.
Go swimming from the rocks
The smooth granite coastline offers classic West Coast swimming. Choose a recognised bathing spot and always take care when rocks are wet.
Explore the walking trails
Several paths cross Smögen’s rocky landscape, including areas around Kleven and Hasselösund. They offer excellent sea views without requiring a long hike.
Take a fishing or archipelago trip
Boat operators offer excursions into the surrounding archipelago, with options that can include fishing and seasonal shellfish experiences.
Visit outside July
For a calmer version of Smögen, consider late spring or early autumn. You still get the sea, scenery and harbour character, but generally with more space to enjoy them.
