Smögen Travel Guide – Discover Sweden’s West Coast

Smögen is one of the best-known seaside destinations on Sweden’s west coast. Located in Bohuslän, around two hours north of Gothenburg by car, this former fishing community is famous for its rocky coastline, colourful wooden boathouses, seafood and busy summer harbour.

Why visit Smögen?

The centre of most visits is Smögenbryggan, the long wooden boardwalk that follows the harbour. During summer, its old boathouses are home to shops, cafés and restaurants, while fishing boats, yachts and excursion boats fill the water. It can be busy in July, but that lively atmosphere is part of the Smögen experience.

Walk a little farther from the harbour and the scenery changes quickly. Smooth granite rocks, open sea and small walking paths make it easy to combine restaurants and shopping with swimming, hiking and quiet coastal views.

A destination for seafood lovers

Fishing remains an important part of Smögen’s identity. Fresh fish, prawns and shellfish are obvious choices when eating here. Buying fresh prawns and enjoying them by the sea is one of the simplest – and most typically West Swedish – experiences you can have.

Explore beyond the harbour

A trip to nearby Hållö is highly recommended. Boats operate from the Smögen area during the main season, taking visitors to an island known for its lighthouse, smooth rocks and clear saltwater swimming.

Smögen is busiest in summer, but spring and early autumn can be excellent alternatives if you prefer fewer visitors. Some restaurants and accommodation stay open outside the peak season, and the dramatic coastline is beautiful throughout the year.
