How to Get to Smögen from Gothenburg and Around Sweden

Smögen is located on Sweden’s west coast in Sotenäs municipality, north of Gothenburg. Although there is no railway station on the island, reaching Smögen is relatively straightforward by car or public transport.

Driving from Gothenburg

For many international visitors, Gothenburg is the natural starting point. The drive to Smögen normally takes around two hours depending on traffic. The final part of the journey passes through Bohuslän before you cross the bridge from Kungshamn to Smögen.

Summer weekends can be busy, particularly in July. If you are travelling by car, arriving earlier in the day can make parking easier.

Travelling by public transport

Smögen can also be reached by bus. Connections from Gothenburg and other towns may vary by season and timetable, so check current public transport information before departure. The nearest major railway hub is Gothenburg Central Station, making train plus bus a practical option for visitors arriving from Stockholm, Malmö or Copenhagen.

Getting around Smögen

Once you arrive, walking is usually the best way to explore. Smögen is compact and the harbour, Smögenbryggan, shops and many restaurants are close together. Comfortable shoes are useful if you plan to walk on the granite rocks and coastal paths.

Boats and nearby Kungshamn

Seasonal passenger boats connect Smögen with destinations including Kungshamn and Hållö. These are useful for sightseeing as well as transport and offer a different view of the coastline.

If Smögen is part of a longer road trip, it combines well with other destinations in Bohuslän. Having a car gives you the greatest flexibility, but you can certainly enjoy Smögen without one.
