Just off the coast from Smögen lies Hållö, a small rocky island that feels very different from the busy harbour. With smooth pink-grey granite, clear water and an historic lighthouse, it is one of the best excursions you can make while staying in the Smögen area.
Getting to Hållö
During the main summer season, passenger boats connect Hållö with Smögen and nearby Kungshamn. The crossing from Smögen is short, making the island suitable for both a half-day excursion and a longer visit. Services are seasonal, so always check the current timetable before travelling.
Hållö Lighthouse
The lighthouse is one of the island’s main landmarks and an important part of Bohuslän’s maritime history. It stands prominently above the low granite landscape and is a natural destination when exploring the island on foot.
Swimming at Marmorbassängen
One of Hållö’s most famous places is Marmorbassängen, a natural swimming spot surrounded by smooth rock. On sunny days the water can look surprisingly turquoise. The sea here is salty and clear, although the water temperature may still feel distinctly Scandinavian.
Explore the landscape
Hållö is a place for walking slowly and enjoying the surroundings. The open landscape offers wide views over the Skagerrak, while traces of the Ice Age can be seen in the shaped granite and giant’s kettles.
Bring suitable shoes, something to drink and clothing for changing coastal weather. There is little shelter compared with the mainland. If you have time, staying longer lets you experience the island after many day visitors have returned to Smögen.
