For many visitors, eating seafood is an essential part of a trip to Smögen. The village has a long fishing tradition, and its harbour is still closely connected with fresh fish and shellfish from the waters off Sweden’s west coast.
Start with Swedish prawns
Fresh prawns are perhaps the easiest introduction to West Coast seafood. You can enjoy them in restaurants, buy them from a fish shop or eat them simply with bread, mayonnaise and lemon. A classic Swedish prawn sandwich – räkmacka – is another popular choice.
Fish and shellfish
Depending on the season and the day’s catch, menus may feature different kinds of fish, crab, mussels and other shellfish. Lobster has a particularly strong association with Bohuslän during the autumn season.
If you want the most local experience, look beyond a fixed list of dishes and ask what is fresh. Coastal restaurants often work with ingredients that reflect both the season and what is available from local suppliers.
Eating around Smögenbryggan
Smögenbryggan has the greatest concentration of restaurants, cafés and places to stop for something quick. In summer the waterfront is busy from daytime into the evening, and eating outdoors overlooking the harbour can be part of the experience.
More than seafood
You do not have to be a seafood enthusiast to enjoy Smögen. Cafés, bakeries and restaurants provide alternatives, and the surrounding area offers additional choices in Kungshamn and elsewhere in Sotenäs.
Opening hours vary considerably with the season. During July there is a wide choice, while outside summer it is wise to check opening times before making a special trip. Whatever you choose, a meal beside the harbour is one of the most memorable ways to experience Smögen.
